An Open Letter to The Home Depot Canada

By Wes Dyson

This letter was addressed to Vinod Nalajala, President of The Home Depot Canada, in response to the company's decision to withdraw its sponsorship of Pride Toronto 2025 - announced just days before Pride Month.

Why This Matters

Pride Toronto is far more than a festival. It is a vital celebration of identity, solidarity, and rights that communities have fought hard to secure. At a time when right-wing ideologies are increasingly threatening those protections across North America, visible corporate support carries real weight.

The Contradiction

The Home Depot Canada has maintained internal diversity initiatives, including their Orange Pride employee resource group, and has received sixteen consecutive years of recognition as a Best Diversity Employer. Withdrawing public financial support while maintaining internal advocacy sends a contradictory message.

Given that the company's customer base is predominantly male and cisgender, visible support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community is especially meaningful. Pulling that support raises the question of whether diversity commitments are only upheld when they are politically comfortable.

The Broader Context

This decision did not happen in a vacuum. The U.S. administration's rollback of DEI protections has created a chilling effect on corporate support for equity initiatives across North America. Canadian companies have a responsibility to stand apart from that trend, not follow it.

What We Are Asking For

Dyson Contracting called on The Home Depot Canada to take three specific steps:

1. **Issue a public apology** to the 2SLGBTQ+ community and Pride Toronto

2. **Reinstate full funding** for Pride Toronto 2025

3. **Reaffirm DEI commitments** with transparency and tangible, ongoing support

Our Response

Dyson Contracting has redirected its business away from The Home Depot and encourages clients and peers in the trades to consider doing the same until meaningful action is taken. Supporting our community is not optional - it is a core value.
