The Rising Trend of Client Theft - and Why We're Speaking Up

By Wes Dyson

At Dyson Contracting, we take pride in going above and beyond for our clients. We are not just here to complete a job - we are here to deliver a result you love. If an issue comes up during a project, we address it before leaving the site. Our approach is simple: every client should be happy and satisfied before we pack up.

But there is a troubling trend growing across the trades - not just in Muskoka, but industry-wide - and it needs to be talked about: intentional client theft.

A Growing Problem

Over the past two years, a rising number of clients have hired contractors or tradespeople with the full intention of skipping out on the final bill. It has happened to us, and it has happened to other contractors in the region. While there may be plenty of reasons people offer - a tough economy, rising material and labour costs - the reality is straightforward: theft is theft.

We are deeply grateful that the vast majority of our clients are honest, hardworking people. We have built genuine relationships with them that we truly value. But a small number of bad actors are making things worse for everyone.

The End of the Handshake Deal

The days of sealing a deal with a handshake are over. In response to these experiences, our contracts have become longer - covering clauses that should be common sense. Payment terms, mutual obligations, requirements that clients not remove or hide materials, not interfere with job sites, and not contact our dealers or suppliers under false pretences. These specific clauses exist because of real experiences with bad actors.

Contracts are not just legal formalities - they are agreements designed to protect both sides. They set clear expectations, and when both parties respect those expectations, everyone wins.

Accountability Is Not Optional

Unfortunately, some individuals sign contracts they never intend to honour. These are not miscommunications or honest disputes - they are deliberate attempts to exploit the process, banking on the assumption that the contractor will not pursue legal action.

We will. When clients violate their agreements and attempt to avoid payment, we will hold them accountable through the appropriate legal channels.

The Ripple Effect

When a contractor gets ripped off, the damage goes beyond that single project. We still have to pay our workers, cover material costs, handle taxes, insurance, overhead, and more. Theft raises costs for everyone and erodes the trust that our industry depends on.

To Our Honest Clients

Thank you. We appreciate you more than you know. You are the reason we love what we do - and we will always have your back.
