New Service: Textured (Popcorn) Ceiling Removal

By Wes Dyson

Dyson Contracting offers a range of drywall finishing services, including the removal of textured (popcorn) ceilings.

Why Remove Textured Ceilings?

Textured ceilings were widely popular during the 1980s and 1990s as an affordable alternative to smooth Level 3 finishes. In 2025, though, they are considered outdated by most homeowners and buyers. Whether you are preparing to list your house or simply looking to refresh your living space, refinishing textured ceilings can make a significant visual impact. It modernizes the room without requiring a large investment.

How the Process Works

The removal process is straightforward:

1. **Remove the textured plaster** from the existing drywall surface

2. **Sand the surface smooth** to prepare it for finishing

3. **Finish the ceiling** as if it were new drywall, bringing it to a clean Level 3 or higher finish

4. **Prime and paint** the ceiling, typically using a flat white from Benjamin Moore

What If the Ceiling Has Been Painted?

If the textured ceiling has already been painted over, the process becomes more intensive. The standard method uses water to loosen and soften the plaster texture, but a layer of paint acts as a barrier that prevents the moisture from penetrating properly. In those cases, more labour-intensive removal methods are required - but the job can still be done effectively.

Complete the Transformation

We also recommend painting the walls in any room where popcorn ceilings are removed. A fresh coat on the walls ties the room together and completes the visual transformation, making the entire space feel new.
